Basic Brands: Noto Botanics

The skin-care industry has a long history of exclusion. Black dermatologist make up less than 6% of the overall practice, Hispanic dermatologists make up only 7%, and only recently have brands started to create products that are gender-neutral. Which is why we’re working with Noto Botanics to bring you a line that is natural, fluid in gender and multi-use. Below is an interview we conducted with the founder of Noto, Gloria Noto. It is the start of a series where we'll profile the brands we've partnered with to give you greater insight into who they are.

Let's start with a basic question but one that is helpful for folks who aren't familiar with Noto - why did you start Noto Botanics?
I felt there was a missing gap in the wellness space that needed more inclusivity, and clean design. And I was at a point in my career that I really needed to do something for myself and something  I was personally connected to.

You were one of the first gender fluid skincare brands when you created Noto, now there are a few others in the same space. What steps does the industry need to take to be more inclusive?
I think having more founders who are queer, or BIPOC continue to create, have safe spaces to create, and grow,  and start their own things. Also to have those companies already in play push harder for representation in their work space and in front of their cameras. Less about the superficial optics and dig deeper into the layers of what their companies are built on.

How do you practice self-care?
By going to therapy, thinking about what I put in my body ( be It for pleasure, taste, or health ), move my body, journal, have meaningful conversations, friends, and loved ones, live with intention. And sometimes by doing nothing and not considering any of that, and just being.

Reflecting on life before COVID, what's the one thing you miss the most?
Kissing my friends on the cheeks

This can be something personal or professional, what's exciting you/give you life right now?
Looking for a dream cabin in the woods
